This study attempts to examine the shortening process from Japanese noun phrase to the so-called “abbreviations”. The research method is to collect the examples of the abbreviations by suing a dictionary firstly. Second, to analyze the shortening process of the abbreviations through the explanations of each abbreviation on the dictionary. By doing this we can infer that what kind of noun phrase is easy or not so easy to be paraphrased into the abbreviations. This study contains six chapters. Chapter 1 is the introduction to this study, including the purpose and the structure of this study. Chapter 2 includes the recapitulation of early researches that relate to this study. Chapter 3 shows the process of shortening the verb-type noun phrase to the abbreviations, and puts emphasis on the tense and aspect of Japanese verb while analyzing the process. Chapter 4 examines the process of shortening “A no B ” to the abbreviations. In Chapter 4, I classified the abbreviations according to the various significations of Japanese noun particle “no”. Chapter 5 discusses the paraphrase process from adjective type noun phrase to the abbreviations, and classifies them according to the characteristic of Japanese adjective. Chapter 6 states the conclusion of this study.
