Traditional bookstores in Taiwan are mostly small in scale and very competitive. Because of the economic recession and the threat of book store chains, the businesses of the traditional bookstores are decreasing and many stores are closed. However, seventy percents of bookstores are still conventional, and they have big influence on the publishing industry, particularly on the conveyance of cultural knowledge. Cultural products are very important to the society, and they affect highly on the essence of a culture and its society progression. So if the publishing industry is shrinking in a society, this will debilitate the development of its culture.

This research focuses on the study of collaborative commerce of the supply chain of publishing industry in Taiwan. Case study method was used to choose a representative book distributor who has close relations and try to establish partnership with conventional bookstores. We explore the feasibility and related issues of collaborative commerce with conventional bookstores led by the case study company.

This research also considered the transaction characteristics of the collaborative partners - one(the case company) to many retailers(conventional bookstores). We designed a framework for the case company to promote her collaborative commerce initiative, and we also use this framework as the process of this research. Major steps of this process include the selection of partners, the interviews on the collaboration needs, and the improvement of before and after collaborative process. This study’s results are shown below:
1.Selection of partners:We choose bookstores that had both higher net sales and high return rates (low market control).
2.The collaboration needs, their willingness and preference on information sharing were also surveyed. The case company could utilize the results of this study as a reference for her strategy development of the collaborative commerce. The main survey results are shown below:
(1)Most of traditional bookstores are very limited in their computer and employee resources, so there are very few conventional bookstores using computers to manage their business. The supply chain of the publishing industry are not well linked electronically.
(2)In all operational processes of traditional bookstores, the receiving of new product information is the most worrisome, so the receiving of new product files from upstream suppliers provides the best opportunity for collaboration.
(3)Depending on the differences of computerization degree, traditional bookstores have different incentive preference. The bookstores who have old computer systems or don’t use computers prefer offering of free bookstore management information system software, and the bookstores who have better computer systems prefer getting dollar rebates or better discounts from upstream suppliers.
(4)Most bookstores showed concerns on the cost of computerization they would need to spend, including the software cost, hardware maintenance expense, the risk of sales and inventory information leakage , and product line completeness of the case company.

This study also reviewed current book replenishment process and provided several improvement suggestions. We used ARIS simulation function to evaluate the operational performance of the old and new replenishment processes. The results of simulation verified that new collaborative replenishment can decrease substantially the time of order processing and delivery.
