Our research probes into the different behaviors to use instant messaging among people with different attachment styles. By reviewing previous literatures, we take the social influence and facilitating conditions, which directly work upon the behaviors to use instant messaging, as control factors and try to realize the effects of different personalities on user behaviors, with the idea of attachment style instead of perceived technology characteristics. We classify attachment styles into four groups by cluster analysis: secure attachment, preoccupied attachment, dismissing attachment, and fearful attachment. And by means of ANCOVA, we present the differences of users with different attachment styles. We have found:

1.Different attachment styles make different behaviors of using instant messaging. This also indicates the personal characteristics affect the way to use media.
(1)People with preoccupied attachment style take instant messaging as a tool of “emotional interaction”.
(2)People with fearful attachment style take instant messaging as a tool of “peeking”.
(3)People with secure attachment style take instant messaging as a tool of “communication”.
(4)People with dismissing attachment style do not present with obvious characteristics, so our research cannot provide the relative information.

2.The login time does not differ significantly in different attachment styles. The most important factor is the facilitating conditions, which include the convenience to assess the computer, the environment of network use, and the users’ working styles. The more sufficient the facilitating conditions are, the longer the login time will be.

3.Among college students, preoccupied attachment style shows predominance, which reveals the importance of the interpersonal relationship to them.
