This research defines internationalization from the perspective of output orientation of firms and establishes one single measure of degree of internationalization. Using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), five measurements can be extracted:
(1) Foreign Sales as a percentage of Total Sales (FSTS);
(2) Foreign Assets as a percentage of Total Assets (FATA);
(3) Foreign Employees as a percentage of Total Employees (FETE);
(4) Foreign Fixed Assets as a percentage of Total Fixed Assets;
(5) Expenses on foreign research and development as a percentage of expenses on total research and development;
The sum of these five is served as the composite measurement for measure of degree of internationalization. Adding the size of a firm as a variable to the measurement, we can further explore the relation between internationalization and the firm operating performance. The survey, “Report on Foreign Investment Strategies of the Manufactures,” conducted by Department of Statistics, Ministry of Economic Affairs between 2002 and 2004 with a total of 1,152 samples. Used the function of Stochastic Production Frontiers to estimate Frontier Production Model and Technical Inefficiency Model. This experiment clearly shows diversity of influences that Internationalization has on firms of different scales. As time goes on, small and medium firms obviously perform worse than large firms on their technical efficiency. Fundamental and technical manufactures would have production much higher than traditional manufactures. On the other hand, it helps traditional manufactures to raise their performance. The more expenses firms spent on research and development, the better performance they can achieve. However, Internationalization is not related to the amount of expenses to spend on research and development. Firms investing in America, Canada, and Mexico would have more obvious increase of performance than those investing in other three areas (South-East Asia, China and Hong Kong, and other areas).
