Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between reaction time and EEG power and coherence. The participants were 30 skilled, male table tennis players. All participants completed both simple and choice reaction time tasks. The pre-imperative stimulus EEG was segmented into two epochs and EEG from each try was further categorized into fast and slow reaction time groups. Paired t tests were employed to compare performance effect on EEG α1, α2 and β1 power and coherence. The results of this study were:
1. Activities of visual cortex were related to reaction time during simple reaction time task. Specifically, level of activation in visual cortex with fast reaction time was higher than with that of slow reaction time.
2. Hemispheric laterality was related to reaction time during choice reaction task. Activities of left hemisphere with fast reaction time were higher than with that of slow reaction time.
3. Communication between left temporal lobe and motor planning lobe was related to reaction time when participants performed simple reaction time task.
4. EEG coherence could reflect the difference of reaction time performance during choice reaction time task. Task performed with right hand in particular showed less communication between left temporal lobe and motor planning lobe when reaction time is shorter than that of longer.

Key words: Reaction time, EEG power, coherence
