本研究探討嬰兒面對母親或陌生人引發挫折時的情緒行為與心跳速率之差異。研究對象為六十位6、12和18個月的嬰兒與其母親。本實驗中,嬰兒均面對母親與陌生人的基準階段、學習階段、挫折階段(取走絣乾)、安撫階段,以及恢復階段。研究中測量嬰兒與成人在其他各階段的心跳速率,並記錄嬰兒的丟打玩具、看餅乾與哭泣等三項情緒行為,分別進行分析。結果發現在基準階段中,嬰兒的平均心跳速率隨著月齡增長而降低,且面對母親的平均心跳速率高於面對陌生人。在學習與挫折情況中,嬰兒面對母親的平均心跳速率高於面對陌生人,其中6和18個月的嬰兒最為明顯。陌生人先時,嬰兒面對母親的平均心跳速率高於面對陌生人。就情緒行為而言,較大月齡的嬰兒表現出較高看餅乾的頻率。嬰兒在挫折階段比學習階段表現出較多的看餅乾與哭泣的行為。嬰兒的哭泣頻率會隨著取走餅乾的次數增加而提高。18個月的嬰兒面對母親第三次餅乾時較6個月嬰兒表現更多的哭泣頻率,且18個月的嬰兒在挫折階段第三次餅乾時面對母親的心跳速率高於陌生人。在恢復階段,6個月的平均心跳速率高於18個月。先經歷陌生人引發挫折的嬰兒表現較多丟打玩具的行為,且12個月的嬰兒較另外兩組嬰兒的頻率為高。交互
作用的分析發現12個月的嬰兒在先經歷陌生人引發挫折時較母親先時表現出較多丟打玩具的行為。母親的平均心跳速率在學習階段開始時較高。綜合而言,嬰兒的挫折反應受引發挫折者和出現順序所影響,且情緒行為隨著月齡而增加,18個月嬰兒面對母親的情緒反應與調節均較6個月明顯。
