The goal of the present study was to examine the role of familiarity in the preference to smile over anger expressions among 4-month-old infants. In Experiment 1, two groups of infants familiarized to female smile and anger faces at fixed interval, they showed no preference between a novel female’s smile and anger faces. A habituation-preference paradigm was used in Experiments 2 and 3. In Experiment 2, when habituated to a small set of people, other than finding a dishabituation on a smile face when habituated to anger faces, the infants showed preferences to a smile over anger expression of the same female even when they were habituated to smile faces. In Experiment 3, when increased to a larger set of expressions from different people, we found the infants habituated to female smile faces kept their preference on a smile expression in preference test, but not on a familiar anger expression. Across three experiments, we manipulated the degree of familiarity to investigate the effects of experience with faces. The asymmetrical results indicated in the series of experiments suggested that 4-month-old infants’ preference to a smile over anger face may due to their typical experience with smile faces early in development.
