The purpose of this study was to investigate the related factors of exercise behaviors including the stages of change, exercise self-efficacy, perceived exercise benefits /barriers which were based on the transtheoretical model, and the relationship with health-related quality of life of people with knee osteoarthritis. There were 200 valid respondents. Health-related quality of life was assessed using Western Ontario and MacMaster (WOMAC) Osteoarthritis Index for pain, stiffness and physical function, and SF-36 for psychosocial function (MH, SF, RE and VT scales). A questionnaire was developed to evaluate stages of change, exercise self-efficacy, perceived exercise benefits and barriers. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, student t test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson product correlation test and discriminant analysis. The results were as follows:

1.The males had better psychosocial quality of life than females. The older the patients were, the lower exercise benefits they perceived and the worse quality of life they had. The perceived exercise benefits and the quality of life were increased for those with a higher education level. The psychosocial function was better with higher income level. The physical quality of life and perceived exercise benefits were higher in people with spouses.

2. The quality of life was positively correlated to exercise self-efficacy, negatively to perceived exercise barriers and had no correlations to perceived exercise benefits.

3. There was no difference between sex, age, education, income, marital status and quality of life in the stages of exercise change with the exception of exercise self-efficacy, perceived exercise benefits and barriers. Exercise self-efficacy was the most influential variable on the stages of exercise change.
