The integration of WLAN (wireless local area network) and cellular communication systems becomes one of the popular topics nowadays. This issue is more sensitive for data users since voice service has almost been satisfied in current cellular communication systems. Conventional handover analysis model is proper for omni-cell system in open area, in which mobility behavior is often modeled as random walking. However, integrated WLAN/UMTS (universal mobile telecommunications system) network is almost built in a dense urban area. Therefore, conventional model is no more reasonable. In this thesis, we focus on the performance analysis of data user handover in integrated WLAN/UMTS network. This thesis present a Markov model for analyzing the performance of inter-system handover in integrated WLAN/UMTS network and construct the novel Markov model for Manhattan-like environment to evaluate the system performances in steady state. On the other hand, the thesis also considers the issue that users with high data rate will prefer to attach on WLAN if they have choice. Different strategies in response to different users’ requirements will be proposed to analyze the system performance in integrated WLAN/UMTS network. In order to operate efficiently in integrated network, we establish the novel analysis model and system architecture to provide for the system manager to estimate the intersystem performance in advance. It has the advantage of decreasing the unnecessary cost.
