This study examined the mass transfer of rotating packed bed (RPB) with various radii of the stationary housing. The volumetric liquid-side mass transfer coefficients (kLa) were obtained using stripping of oxygen from water by nitrogen under various operating conditions including gas flow rate, liquid flow rate, rotor speed, inner and outer radii of packed bed.
According to the experimental results, the kLa values appeared to increase with an increasing liquid flow rate and rotor speed but be independent of the gas flow rate. Also, it was found that the effect of stationary housing on the mass transfer rotating packed bed was larger as the volume of packed bed was reduced. This implied that the outer end effect was significant for the smaller size of RPB. Moreover, it was noted that the kLa values increased with a decreasing volume of packed bed. This characteristic was also observed in the previous work presented by Chen et al. (2005). A correlation taking end effects into consideration was obtained to predict the liquid-side mass transfer coefficient.
