The preservation work of historic buildings in Taiwan put the most emphasis on traditional buildings, but less attention on modern buildings in the past. Consequently, modern buildings were damaged to different extent and are disappearing fast. In order to establish complete build- ing development history of Taiwan, it is of great urgency to study and preserve modern buildings. Examining the results of modern building restoration, the hardware of doors and windows, which is still in the state of disorder and trivial, is short of discussion, compilation and classification at present. For insufficient knowledge and neglect in attitude about doors and windows hardware, there is quite blank in the recording and study of hardware components of buildings, and even possible damage of doors and windows hardware components or direct replacement in the future restoration and reuse process. Thus the completeness in building preservation will be lost. Based on this, it is necessary to survey, record, and study doors and windows hardware of modern buildings constructed during Japanese colonial period for the present.
This thesis plans to establish a new systematic method of classification , a new analysis of operational sequence and basic information about doors and windows hardware of modern buildings of Japanese colonial period in Taiwan through documentation collection, arrange- ment and on-the-spot survey of building cases, to discuss the production system and circulation situation of hardware components, and understand the evolvement of hardware in terms of style, size and material, for reference of restoration and reuse of modern buildings in the future. Fur- thermore, it can help to avoid the neglect to doors and windows hardware of modern buildings and mistakes made in maintenance, and also improve the technical level of domestic cultural assets preservation work.
