本論文內容主要分為四章。在第一章中，介紹寫作緣起與郎尼根思想的背景。在第二章裡，先從亞理斯多德《靈魂論》的傳統談起，特別是「主動理智」與「被動理智」這兩個理智的不同面向，所引起後世的不同看法，多瑪斯為解決爭論所延伸出的見解，而後形成多瑪斯對知識論問題的特色，尤其是人的理智運作情形。由理智運作情形，進一步引出人的理智運作與心語的關連性。後來，多瑪斯進一步將抽象過程套用在主動理智與被動理智的互動上，人的理智是藉著抽象作用 (abstraction)，從個別的感性圖像 (sense images)中抽出普遍心象(species)，而獲得概念。第三章討論抽象作用，先從傳統上來談所謂的抽象三程度。郎尼根認為抽象是理解活動的特性，故也應該有心理方面的討論。進而在物理抽象和數理抽象裡又分出抽象三階段，分別是：客觀抽象（objective abstraction）、領會抽象（apprehensive abstraction）和形式抽象（formative abstraction）。人的理解當中還有一重要事實，即「影像的洞察」（Insight into phantasm），指的是人無法脫離圖像而進行思考，必須對於理智所產生的影像加以洞察，才能進一步獲得理解。在第四章裡頭，由人會以問題的形式作為認識外在事物的起點，討論亞理斯多德提出的四類問題後來歸結為「悟性問題－Quid sit？」和「反省問題－An sit？」。這兩大類問題分別代表了定義與判斷兩種理智的運作模式。也就是郎尼根稱第一種運作為「直接理解」（direct understanding），第二種運作為「反省理解」（reflective understanding）。因之而有「心語」的兩類，分別是定義（Verbum as definition）的角度，第二個則是「心語」是連合或是分辨（Verbum as composition or division）的角度。由於，抽象作用和影像的洞察這些理解當中的心理事實，皆屬於郎尼根所稱的「直接理解活動」，所指的也就是第一類的心語－定義類心語。因此，在第四章中特別將討論重點集中於第二類的心語－判斷類心語上。而在第二類心語中，先從連合或是分辨談起，進而談人理智活動中的推論，最後是討論判斷活動。經由「心語」概念的探討中，意會到郎尼根與多瑪斯之遙契。
