Introduction:
In the age of medical information explosion, it is impossible for medical students to learn all of the knowledge from college education. In order to develop life-long learning concepts and skills, Problem-based learning (PBL) courses have become a main trend in medical education. PBL environment enhances learning motivations of medical students. They need to use various channels to get information and solve clinical questions.
MEDLINE database is an important source in medical research field. However novice searchers often have trouble search MEDLINE database. Therefore it is essential for the medical library to educate medical students a database searching skills. It can also help them reach PBL courses objective.
The purpose of this study is to investigate MEDLINE database usage of medical students, the influence of PBL courses on MEDLINE use, self-perceived information retrieval skills and library instruction. The results of this study will be helpful for medical libraries in offering instruction courses and information retrieval services.
Methods:
This study was conducted by a questionnaire survey.
The participants were 413 students who are 3rd-year, 4th-year and 5th-year medical students at National Taiwan University, National Yang-Ming University, Fu Jen Catholic University and Tzu Chi University.
The results of the study include:
1. The barriers found by medical students in searching MEDLINE medical database are difficulties with filtering articles and unfamiliarity with features of the database. Additionally, the quantity of electronic full-text articles is another problem.
2. PBL courses increase the frequencies of using MEDLINE medical database and the need of advanced information retrieval skills.
3. The reasons for users not attending education courses include: schedule problems; no interest; and not being informed.
4. Medical students are not satisfied with their self-perceived information retrieval skills. Moreover. Students who join in library instruction are satisfied with their retrieval skills. Library Instruction could help medical students improve their information skills.
Suggestions:
To medical schools:
1. Integrating information literacy courses into medical curriculum.
2. Enhancing the cooperation between the library and medical schools, moreover The Library should support information needs for PBL courses.
To libraries:
1. Collecting more electronic full-text articles.
2. Formulating instruction courses to meet students’ need, and evaluate effectiveness regularly.
3. Raising the frequencies of instruction courses usage by distance learning.
4. Enhancing the promotion of library instruction activities.
