Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a relative technical efficiency measurement tool,
which uses operation research techniques to automatically calculate the weights assigned
to the inputs and outputs of the production units which being assessed. The actual
input/output data values are then multiplied with the calculated weights to determine the
efficiency scores. Since the efficiency scores calculated by the DEA model are sensitive
to the values of the bounds, the uncertainty of the bounds gets passed onto the efficiency
scores. The uncertainty in the efficiency scores becomes unacceptable when we consider
the fact that the DEA results are used for making important decisions like allocating
funds and taking action against inefficient units.
Capital sources play an important role in Vietnamese enterprises in general and Small-
Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in particular. In order to do business successfully, SMEs
have to use capital sources more efficiently. Therefore, evaluating the efficiency of
capital sources is essential. The efficiency of using capital sources reflexes the ability of
using capital in business activities in order to maximize profit with lowest cost. Moreover,
the efficiency of using capital sources in Vietnamese SMEs is affected by internal and
external factors. These factors affect not only on the firms’ performance but also on the
future probability of becoming a larger enterprise.
The main purpose of this study is to further explore the operational benefits of Data
Envelopment Analysis (DEA) methodology and application within the manufacturing
environment. This multi-criteria decision making technique takes critical factors within a
iii
company and designates them as either an input or output in an effort to measure
performance efficiency. DEA algorithms solve models linearly, maximizing outputs
while minimizing inputs in order to arrive to an optimal efficiency point. Balanced
scorecard helps management within organizations to achieve their vision of long and
short term goals by identifying performance measures that can be continuously measure
in order to assure these goals will be achieved. In this research a comprehensive
application of DEA and regression analysis shows the Efficiency of Using Capital
Sources in Vietnamese Small and Medium Enterprises. Otherwise, 54 valid
questionnaires were obtained from the research subject focus on describing the capital
source in Vietnamese SMEs, therefore, the efficiency of using capital sources in
Vietnamese SMEs were identified the factors influencing on the efficiency of using
capital sources in Vietnamese SMEs, and the relationship between efficiency of using
capital sources and factors influencing on the capital’s efficiency in Vietnamese SMEs.
Based on the results of comparing the different capital sources among three levels of
efficiency of using capital in company and comparing the different capital sources among
the three levels of efficiency of using capital in company, however, there are don’t have
significantly different between three level and it is hard to increase the investment from
individuals unrelated to the firm.
