Hiking has ranked the top five favorite of the Taiwan citizens’ outdoor leisure activities. In Taiwan, one in four people has the experience of going hiking. According to National Council on Physical Fitness and Sports of Executive Yuan, R.O.C. reported the investigation result that “mountaineering” and “hiking” are the most popular leisure activities which Taiwanese people engaged in (Chen, 2003). The survey of Taiwan Area Citizen Leisure Activity from the Ministry of Interior (2003) also showed that the visits of Taiwanese engaged in the mountaineering and hiking has reached approximately above five million every year nowadays and established 376 related associations. In sum, the hiking is one of most popular leisure activity in Taiwan. The purpose of this study is to illuminate the importance of hikers’ psychological traits and phenomenon toward the growth of the leisure industry.
Previous hiking related researches on psychological are limited in that they only focus on the study of precedent variables – motivation, cognition, and benefits; seldom discussed the posterior variables. In this regards, this study has proposed posterior psychological variable discussion. In other words, this research has investigated relationship among enduring involvement, benefits of leisure, and well-being of hikers. Also, this study has build up the cause and effect relationships of EI, benefits of leisure and well-being for hikers and to compare the differences between independent hikers’ model and group hikers’ model.
The findings of this research shows: Enduring involvement is significant and positively related to benefits of leisure and well-being; benefits of leisure are positively related to well-being and also a mediator of enduring involvement and well-bing. Independent hikers’ model and group hikers’ model has significant differences. Group hikers have deeper hiking experience than independent hikers.
