ABSTRACT This paper first chronicled Professor Jhao-Jhen Yang’s life. The chronicle covered his childhood, educational backgrounds, career as an educator and achievements as a writer composer. Apart from his personal history, a second focus was placed on the music which Professor Yang had composed. The purpose was to find out what he had accomplished in the field of music in Taiwan. As had been recognized by the Taiwanese music circle, Professor Yang’s success in music education was a great example set for people to follow.
This research paper was comprised of five chapters. The reasons, purposes, extent and methods of the research were specified in Chapter 1. Professor Yang’s record of life events was then presented in Chapter 2. The record began with his boyhood and ended with his retirement. His schooling process, career as an educator and attainments in music composition and literary writing were introduced, too. Next, Chapter 3 was about Professor Yang’s academic works and his success in music education. The findings of this chapter were resulted from a study on three of his publications – ‘The Theory and Practice of Singing Instructions’, ‘Principles of Music Composition’, and ‘The Research on Hakka Folk Songs of Nine Tunes and Eighteen Variations’. Furthermore, a brief examination of Professor Yang’s music was carried out in Chapter 4, and the music was selected from three of the books authored by Professor Yang. They were entitled ‘A Collection of Children’s Songs’, ‘A collection of Yang Jhao-Jhen’s Songs’, and ‘A Collection of Piano Music of Chinese Folk Songs’. Finally, the paper concluded in Chapter 5. This chapter was a summary of the previous chapters, mainly on Professor Yang’s attainments in and his influence on music education in Taiwan.
In conclusion, Professor Yang’s major accomplishments in music education were as follows: First, his works served as the valuable model, demonstrating the right way to compose songs for schoolchildren in Chinese language. Second, he was the innovator to establish the instruction of vocal music education in Taiwan. Third, he pioneered and developed the instruction of music composition in Taiwan. Fourth, he was a distinguished scholar on Hakka folk songs and had enjoyed a reputable status at the national level. Fifth, he was the earliest academic to compile teaching materials in music education. Sixth, he had successfully trained a large number of outstanding music teachers
