ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was (1) to explore the content and the methods of teacher selection, (2) and to provide suggestions as a reference for the teacher selection of Taiwan elementary school.
This study is undertaken by the way of the questionnaire investigation. The self-made study tool is “the questionnaire of teacher selection in Taiwan elementary schools”. The samples were picked up from the qualified teachers of the public elementary schools in Tao-yuan County, Hsin-chu County, Hsin-chu City, and Miao-li County. The data was analyzed by using the statistics of percentage and Chi-square Test.
According to the results of the analyzed data, the conclusions were as follows:
1.The examination of teacher selection should include multiple items, such as oral test, paper-pen test, and so on. 2. In the percentage of the ways of teacher selection, teaching and paper-pen tests were considered important. 3.The content of the paper-pen test should include educational academic subjects and speciality examination. 4.Setting up the criteria of the test in advance, adopting multiple-choice test, and using open questions can effectively raise the validity and objectivity of paper-pen test. 5.Teachers thought the content of oral test should be classroom management, educational idea, professional spirit, and the knowledge and skill of teaching. 6.Most teacher thought that the time of oral test should be 6 to 10 minutes. 7.It’s appropriate that the questions of the oral test should be discussed and decided in advance by the oral-test committee, or the teachers draw the lot from the questions made up by the host unit. 8.The most effective way to improve the validity and objectivity of the oral test is to increase the committee members. 9.Most teachers thought the proper teaching-test time should be 11 to 15 minutes. 10.The teaching-test unit should be drawn or picked up by the teacher from the units decided by the host unit. 11.Increasing the committee members, setting up the criteria of test in advance, and inviting the committee members with professional background can raise the validity and objectivity of teaching test. 12.The registration expenses of the first-step and second-step tests should be charged separately, and the reasonable expense should be around $400 dollars. 13. With regard to the possible ways of dealing with the teacher selection, the interviewees with different background all agree that it’s ideal to entrust the bureau of education to conduct the first step and the second step teacher selection, and the Way-1, which schools deal with the teacher selection themselves, is the worst. 14.With regard to the merits of estimating the possibility of the ways of teacher selection, the opinion of the interviewees with different background doesn’t exist much difference. 15.With regard to the possible ways of dealing with the teacher selection, all the teachers thought that the Way-4 ,which entrusts the bureau of education to conduct the first step paper-pen test and the schools may deal with the second step oral-test , has higher possibility, and the lowest possibility is the Way-1, which the teacher selection is conducted only by the schools. 16.With regard to the possible ways of dealing with the teacher selection, the interviewees with different background thought that the degree of possibility is roughly the same.
Finally, according to the study outcomes, some concrete suggestions are proposed as references for teachers participating in teacher selection, selecting authorities, governmental institution for education, and correlated study in the future.
