Abstract
Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald is now regarded as one of the greatest writers of the 20th century in the United States. In his forty-four-year life, he underwent both success and failure With his talents and education, Fitzgerald succeeded at a young age by his first popular novel, This Side of Paradise. However, in the following years, his extravagant lifestyle with his wife, Zelda Sayre, and his drinking problem constantly deprived him of his energy on his works. Moreover, his aspiration for literature was
often impeded by his writing commercial stories for money. Finally, along with Zelda’s mental breakdown, his declined literary reputation, and his alcoholism, he sank into a gloomy period of depression and died of a massive heart attack in 1940, at a relatively young age of 44. By the time of his death, his books had dropped from sight and he was nearly forgotten by readers and literary critics.
Through his unusual life with dramatic rise and fall, Fitzgerald had always been dominated by four major factors: education, marriage, literary aspiration, and alcohol. As a result, this thesis will try to analyze how the four major factors influenced and dominated his life and how the legendary course of his life had been reflected in his works.
Chapter one has thus far briefly introduced the life of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Chapter Two will focus on the process of Fitzgerald’s education, especially the period he spent at Princeton. Chapter Three will deal with the impact of the marriage between him and Zelda. Chapter Four will discuss his aspiration for literature. Chapter Five will discuss how alcohol dominated his life as well as his works. Chapter Six, the concluding chapter will summarize the main ideas discussed in the previous chapters.
