以「身體會說話」為中心論點,本論文旨在探討牙買加‧金凱得在《我母親的自傳》所描繪的各式各樣身體的表現與聲音。依據傅柯的「馴順的身體」概念及巴赫汀的「怪誕可笑的身體」論述,本論文揭露了這些各式各樣的身體如何在後殖民社會多明尼加當中發聲。
本論文分為五章,著重在牙買加‧金凱得如何在權力運作關係中,將這些各式各樣的身體描繪成男性身體和女性身體、馴順身體和怪誕可笑的身體及殖民者的身體與被殖民者的身體。第一章:說明研究主題、動機及論文結構。第二章:〈身體會說話─從權力運作關係中觀看身體〉,著重在各式各樣身體的呈現與表達,並探討這些多樣化的身體如何開展成為後續章節文本分析的批判基礎。我認為牙買加‧金凱得其筆下生活在後殖民社會多明尼加當中的多樣化身體,應該被視為反對殖民威權最強而有力的抗拒。第三章:〈馴順的身體反應殖民者的統治〉,依據傅柯馴順身體的概念,探討「規訓」在(後)殖民情境中,如何被視為殖民律法及殖民者的訓誡及法規,並如何運作在身體之上。而在這權力運作關係中,馴順的身體不斷地被塑造與再塑造,真正的自我已迷失在殖民者的規訓中,甚至被抹殺掉。第四章:〈以怪誕可笑的身體抗拒殖民者的統治〉,主要以巴赫汀「怪誕可笑的身體」理論為中心,探討身體如何抗拒殖民統治。我們強調席拉的身體如何被賦予力量講述她個體的慾望並建構出屬於自己及其族群的故事。第五章:〈結論─各式各樣身體發聲〉,為論文的結論。
Based on the idea that “body can talk,” the thesis attempts to investigate the performance and voice of the varied bodies, which Jamaica Kincaid depicts in The Autobiography of My Mother. In accordance with Foucault’s concept of “docile body” and M. M. Bakhtin’s idea of “grotesque body,” the thesis unveils how these varied bodies articulate in the postcolonial society, Dominica.
This thesis is divided into five chapters focusing on how the author depicts such varied bodies as male and female bodies, docile bodies and grotesque bodies, and the colonizer’s bodies and the colonized bodies within power relations. Chapter One, Introduction, gives an overall introduction to the motivation and the structure of the thesis. Chapter Two, “Body Can Talk—Viewing Bodies within Power Relations,” pivots on the performance and expressions of the varied bodies and investigates how the varied bodies deploy a critical ground for the textual analysis that follows. I argue that Jamaica Kincaid’s varied bodies in the postcolonial Dominican society should be viewed as strong resistance against colonial hegemonic power. Appropriating Foucauldian idea of the docile body, Chapter Three, “Docile Bodies as a Response to Colonial Domination,” investigates how the disciplines which produce docile bodies are represented in the (post)colonial context as the colonial law and the colonizer’s regulations and rules, exercised upon the bodies in the (post)colonial society. We situate bodies within such a postcolonial society or country as Dominica in Jamaica Kincaid’s The Autobiography of My Mother. The docile bodies are shaped and reshaped within power relation while the true self is lost, masked, and even erased by the colonial disciplines. Chapter Four, “Grotesque Bodies as Resistance against Colonial Domination,” centers on how M. M. Bakhtin’s concept of “grotesque images of body” can be appropriated to depict the body as strong resistance against colonial domination. I focus on how Xuela’s body is empowered to speak out her own desire and construct not simply her own but also her people’s stories. Chapter Five, “Conclusion: Varied Bodies Articulate”—offers a tentative conclusion to this thesis.
