The Institute for Elementary School Teacher in Taiwan has held “The Workshop of Children’s Literature Writing” 12 times since 1972. It has trained about 400 teachers for writing Children books in 19 years. Mr.Chen Mei Sheng and Mr.Xu Cheng Ping are two key men for the happened of this workshop which is also appeared at the particular atmosphere. People are not allowed to express their ideas free under KMT’s rule then. The authorities also expected teachers write political-correct works. However, it’s totally fair and relatively free in this workshop. Political issues didn’t have visible influence on it.
Among 102 lecturers, there are 8 core ones who designed the class program and lead the group discussion. They are famous writers with significant positions from major printed media or publishers. There were 6 core lecturers born in Mainland China, and the others were Taiwanese. There are moderators who live with the trainees during the workshop. 8 of out 9 core ones were born in Taiwan. No matter Mainlander or Taiwanese, they accomplished their job well in this workshop.
Children Literature theory, writing training and general address are three major sections in the workshop. The workshop is distinguished by 56 different theory courses and professional writing training. The general address provided the educational policy and the introduction of P.R.C.
Many important local Children’s Literature writers came from this Workshop. Even though they are aged now, these writers don’t stop their Children’s Literature writing. They are influential to the improvement of domestic Children’s Literature writing ability and the expansion of local Children’s Literature market when back to their own counties. To sum up, this workshop is one of most important event in Taiwan Children’s Literature History.
