This study was conducted to examine the performance improvement of the redesign of an input device that was developed in the laboratory (NSC mouse I). In this redesign, an optical sensor was used to replace the original pressure sensor to reduce the side pressure; a plastic ribbon was used to fix the device to the fingers to minimize friction; and each button was relocated to best fit to the movement direction of each fingers.
Two experiments were conducted to test and verify the benefits of the NSC mouse II. Nineteen subjects were recruited in the study. The first experiment was to examine pointing and dragging performance of a wireless mouse, a joystick, and the NSC mouse II. Fitt’s Law was used to compare the differences among three input device. The result showed that the wireless mouse was rated better than that of joystick and NSC mouse II, with a shorter movement time and a lower error rate.
The second experiment was to examine task performance of a wireless mouse, a remote controller for a media center (MCR), and the NSC mouse II in a multimedia scenario. We found that the NSC mouse performed as well as that of the MCR in most of the tasks. Among all, the performance time of the NSC mouse II was shorter that that of the MCR in the dragging task. The redesign of the NSC mouse II was justified in a multimedia environment.
