Sun Yi-jang(1848-1908)is a major scholar who devotes himself to the studies of classical ,Mohist,paleography, philology in Zhejiang province in the late Ching Dynasty. Among his academic works, the study of "Chou-li" helps him achieve the highest reputation. Sun Yi-jang had started the study of "Chou-li" since the age of twenty-six. He finished eighty-six volumes of "Chou-li cheng-yi", one volume of "Chou-li san chia i -Chu" , one volume of "Chiu-chi ku i shu", two volumes of "Chou-li cheng-yao"; in addition, he also wrote "Che-fa kao","Shen-cheng-lun Wang Cheng lun hun-chi I tung kao" and "Chia-ching pen Chou-li Cheng chu pa" included in the collected work, "Chou ching shu lin" and the unpublished "Chou-li chu shu chiao chi", which was collected in "Shih san ching chu shu chiao chi", within thirty years. Sun Yi-jang’s interest in the studies of "Chou-li" was under the influence of the expectation of his father, Sun I-Yen. Sun Yi-jang’s father devoted himself to the studies of Ynng-Chia scholars. The Ynng-Chia scholars hoped to improve the corrupted situations with the means of following the ancient history, and Sun Yi-jang’s father believed it to be a correct direction because to him, the purpose of learning and studying should be for the welfare of the society; thus, his father taught him "Chou-li" by himself. However, Sun Yi-jang himself preferred the study methodology of the scholars of Kan-lung and Chia-ching Dynasties. In his "Ta jih jen Kuan-Sen Hung shu ", Sun Yi-jang states, “These scholars are whom I have respected the most since I started to devote myself to doing researches.” As we make a survey of Sun Yi-jang’s research works of "Chou-li", it is true that all of his researches follow this principle, with the only exception of "Chou-li cheng-yao". Sun Yi-jang’s works on "Chou-li" not only help the academic circles of the late Ching Dynasty have a better understanding in this field but also can be deemed as a major representative of the studies of "Chou-li" in this period。Chang Ping-Ling esteems Sun Yi-jang’s "Chou-li cheng-yi" as the best works, and he says, “No one can be ever better than Sun Yi-jang’s achievements in the studies of "Chou-li".” Tsao Yuen-Pi states, “Sun Yi-jang’s "Chou-li cheng-yi" adopts different viewpoints from literary and academic works. Although there are some minute mistakes, yet it includes abundant reasonable sources. There has been no scholar better than he since Cheng hsuan.” Basically, he takes a positive attitude toward Sun Yi-jang’s achievement although he has different opinions toward Sun Yi-jang’s refutation on Ku Kung-yen. For contemporary scholars, Sun Yi-jang’s "Chou-li cheng-yi" is a necessary and essential works for them to have a better understanding of the meaning of "Chou-li". As we review the previous studies, we could find that scholars who do researches on the achievement of Sun Yi-jang’s "Chou-li" all focus on the discussion of "Chou-li cheng-yi". It surly is a correct way, yet if we could have a thorough study on all the works of Sun Yi-jang’s studies on "Chou-li", it will help us have a more comprehensive understanding of his achievements. Thus, this dissertation takes “Research of Sun Yi-jang’s Study on "Chou-li"” as the main topic with the primary concern to discuss the formation of the study of Sun Yi-jang’s "Chou-li". To accomplish this, it is necessary to have a detailed analysis on the relative works of the study of Sun Yi-jang’s "Chou-li". In addition, the writer of this dissertation would also like to investigate Sun Yi-jang’s viewpoint on "Chou-li", his ways of reading classical along with the discussion of the position of his study of "Chou-li" in the history of classical .
