Taoyuan International Airport is one of the ‘Ten Major Construction Projects’ and it was opened in February 1979. Along with the golden age of Taiwan’s economic booming, it has made a great contribution. ‘It’ plays many roles. Apart from leading people entering the gate of our nation from different space, it has also created values of its peripheral environments and the values of land utilization. Without noticing, the pristine Daqiuyuan has been taken into a brand new territory.
This study discovered residents’ migration process and during which the production of spaces has been carried out when thirty years ago residents were forced to move because of the airport construction. The environmental changes behind the produced space ‘Ancian Community’ were discussed as well. The alternation of landscape and re-utilization made new space. Those forced-to-move residents under involuntary dismantlement started the motion lines to search ‘homes’. This study focused on four aspects: (1) The memories of hometown life before the move (2) The migration journey under involuntary dismantlement (3) After the migration, the rebuilding processes of life and space (4) The new born sense of place
‘Dismantlement & migration’ are still very common in current urban development programs. The implementations of policies are absolutely different from residents’ subjective cognitions. Problems may vary greatly in reality. Nevertheless, the migration plan for Taoyuan International Airport was the only one, which was well planned and executed at that time. This study makes a comprehensive description of this historical event and also reflects whether the original policies containing any defective parts. The value, the sustainability and the adversity of existing Ancian Community are revealed as well. These potential questions occurred during the past thirty years now have a venting channel. With collected authentic information, this study can serve as a guideline to design programs for future important constructions.
