In this study, we investigate the sources of the firm performance differentials in Taiwan, China, and South Korea. The past researches follow the augement between
industry organization theory and resource-based view and used the database of American firms mostly. China has become an emerging market that affects economic activities of its neighborhood, especially Taiwan and South Korea. First, we compare the difference of competitive environment among these regions. Second, we employ the procedure of components of variance to test the source of firm performance in Taiwan, China, and South Korea.
The findings suggest that firm effect dominates the explanination of the variation in performance. The industry and year effects are either negligible or else have no impact on the variation in performance. (Taiwan: 42.51%; South Korea: 44.25%; China: 20.49%).
