本篇論文討論十六世紀英格蘭陸軍在武器與戰術方面走向火藥化的歷程，研究重點較偏向在步兵，故以長弓到火槍的轉變為本論文的一條主線。

論文主要內容分為三章，第一章「變遷的背景」談十六世紀英格蘭開始軍事改革前的背景，包括了中古後期長弓的崛起與成熟，以及十六世紀初期發生在歐陸軍隊中的火藥化。

第二章「長弓式微的開始：1513-1550」介紹十六世紀前期，英格蘭在軍事方面由盛轉衰的歷程。在十六世紀初，英格蘭曾再度以中世紀的「長弓與戈」大敗武器裝備略為先進的敵人，將冷兵器的威力發揮到極致，因而再度站上軍事史的高點。但長弓隨即盛極而衰，連帶使英格蘭本土軍事力量的衰敗，特殊的是這並非戰場上的失敗所導致，而是來自於英格蘭國內政治、社會、經濟等諸多因素的牽扯。而後海外傭兵一度成為英軍的一股重要力量，但傭兵終究未能取代傳統的民兵。

第三章「由低谷走向轉機：1550-1603」以1550 年到1603 年為斷限，1550年代終成為英格蘭軍事的低潮期。但從1550 年代末期到1570 年代，英格蘭在這段期間在軍事制度上仍進行了重要的改革。1585 年以後軍援尼德蘭，更成為英格蘭陸軍武備與戰術完成近代化的最後推手。
