Abstract

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to: 1.compare the recruitment of lumbar and abdominal muscles in different intensity of upper extremity exercises on and off unstable surface. 2. exam the relationship between intensity of upper extremity exercises and the recruitment of trunk muscles. 3. compare the recruitment of trunk muscles in different exercise intensity. METHODS: Twenty voluntary male subjects with intermediately trained experience and without LBP(low back pain) were included in this study. They were introduced to perform seated shoulder press (SSP) and seated arm anterior raise (SAAR) in 3 intensities (30%、60%、85% 1RM) both on stable (bench) and unstable (Swiss ball) surface. The testing sites were inclusive of bilaterally lower abdominal、upper and lower lumbar muscles. The raw data were collected by using MP150 system and normalized by AcqKnowledge Software (ACK 3.8.1). RESULTS: The result of this study indicated that the recruitment of lumbar and abdominal muscles, both on stable and unstable surfaces, was positively correlated to intensity of both the exercises (p<0.01). As to SAAR motion, the recruitment of trunk muscles on labile surface were significantly higher than stable surface (p<0.05). The highest average recruitment of lower abdominal、upper and lower lumbar muscles went up to 35.9%±21.3 (left side)、73.7%±27.0 (right side)、54.9%±14.0 (right side). Additionally, The highest average recruitment of lower abdominal、upper and lower lumbar muscles in SSP went up to 45.5%±26.7 (left side)、60.1%±18.1 (right side)、37.9%±12.1 (right side). The SSP motion arose more abdominal muscles, but less lumbar muscles than SAAR motion. CONCLUSION: The results showed that these exercise modes could efficiently evoke the recruitment of trunk muscles, thus, we could regard this 2 exercises as beneficial training modes. It is concluded that upper extremity exercises on labile (unstable) surface recruit abdominal and lumbar muscles higher than stable surface.
