Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore primary school students’ alternative conceptions about biological reproduction and its sources. The samples consisted of the first grade students to the sixth grade students at the elementary school in Chiayi County. After conducting a survey, we chose thirty students who had alternative conceptions about the meaning of reproduction to be interviewees. We elicited these students’ concepts about biological reproduction through interview-about-instances method. The study revealed the following findings:
1. The senior students were better than junior students in understanding about the meaning and function of reproduction, but some of senior and junior students were confused with the concepts of reproduction, growth and nourish. Meanwhile, some of them who did not understand the definition of reproduction had alternative conceptions about plant reproduction or animal reproduction.
2. There were not more differences of alternative conceptions between senior and junior students about plant reproduction. The junior students used plant habits to explain plant reproduction, such as the plant growth needs soil or the leaves will grow up day by day .
3. Some junior students did not understand there was more than one way of animal reproduction. Moreover, some senior students considered the concept of animal reproduction was equal to the concept of animal mating .
4. Eighty alternative conceptions about biological reproduction were identified in this study. They were constructed by these students from their personal experiences, social interaction with others and misunderstand or misinterpret the information they got.
