The contents of abstract in this thesis:
The purpose of this study is to examine whether the setting of the initial weight in psychophysics influences the Maximum Acceptable Weight of Life (MAWL). 30 test subjects were therefore recruited for this study. A psychophysics experiment was then set up with two types of initial weight (light and heavy) and two frequencies (one repetition per minute and two repetitions per minute), resulting in four possible combinations (referred to as 1 light, 1 heavy, 2 light and 2 heavy). This was used to find the MAWL, heart rate, frequency of adjustments and to calculate the error rate (where the MAWL value decided for the higher frequency was greater than the MAWL value for the lower frequency is defined as an error). The results showed that the frequency and initial weight had a significant influence on the MAWL value. As the frequency increased, the MAWL value decreased; as the initial weight increased the MAWL value increased; the frequency had a significant influence on heart rate. As the initial weight increased the frequency of adjustments decreased; the error rate was highest for the (2 heavy > 1 light) combination. This may be attributed to the lower frequency of adjustments made by the test subjects with the initial weight. This led to the MAWL value at high frequency being greater still than the MAWL at low frequency. This study therefore recommends that when carrying out psychophysics experiments, the initial weight can be set as light then adjusted by the test subject until it’s too heavy and reduced again. This results in a more accurate final MAWL.
