The purpose of this study is to investigate the current status of the first-grade students using their singing voice in Taipei County. The researcher identified the types of their singing voices, examined the use of their singing voices, and compared the differences of their singing voices between different genders.
Through an approach of randomly stratified and cluster sampling, the samples were the first-grade students from nine elementary schools in Taipei County. A total of 230 children were tested individually by using Rutkowski’s Singing Voice Development Measure (SVDM).
This study found that the samples achieved an average grade point overall of 3.09 and were labeled as Category 3, the “Limited Range Singer.” Among the nine categories of singing voice on Rutkowski’s scale, none samples were classified as Category 1, the “Pre-Singer.” Few were classified as Category 1.5, the “Inconsistent Speaking Range Singer.” A majority of samples were grouped as Category 3, the “Limited Range Singer,” reaching a percentage of 28.70. However, 6.09 percent of samples used their singing voice well and were classified as Category 5, which means the “Singer.” As for children’s use of singing voice, it is no significant difference in gender.
This study suggests that before music teachers offer singing lessons, they should diagnose children’s use of singing voice by using Rutkowski’s SVDM. Suggestions for future research, researchers can apply the singing voice research to other cities by examining the current status of children’s use of singing voice in Taiwan. Researchers can also conduct cross-culture studies on elementary school students from different ethnic and cultural background.
