This study aimed to develop a parent training program on joint attention intervention for young children with autism and to investigate the intervention effects.
A single subject research method with multiple probes across behaviors design was adopted. Two parents of young children with autism participated in this study. The independence variable was parent training program on joint attention intervention. The dependent variable was the performance of the three target behaviors (nonverbal interaction, using nonverbal communicative gesture, sharing with gaze) of the parents.
The results indicate that the parents’ performance of three target behaviors was improved. Furthermore, the frequency of joint attention of the preschool children with autism is highly correlated with parents’ performance of three target behaviors. The results implicates that parents’ training on joint attention intervention is very promising.
