About Taiwan-Japan’s Language Implication and Functionality
-- The core meaning of plea and refusal –
We always feel confused about the indirectness of Japanese language expression.
As the matter of fact, Both Taiwan and Japan do seriously care about inter-personal relationship and communications. The difference is, Taiwanese emphasize individual character, so while in expression, always contain more subjective and more direct way to spell out; while Japanese emphasize the team effort and harmony, so they are used to use more objective and implicated way to speak out which is easier to understand even it is not very explicit in expression.. Because of these differences, it could create misunderstanding and confusion during the dialogue.
In order to avoid the misunderstanding, as Japanese teacher, while instructing the lesion, should not only pay attention to the wording and grammar but also the implication of its culture impact.
This essay tries to use plea and refusal as the topic to explore two language’s wording implication and function. For example, Japanese use “plea” as a primary request and avoid the dilemma if got refused, while we view it as the unclear request that is easier to get bounced.
Due to the difference of culture background, the learner needs understand the language and its implication – do not misjudge a language by using your own culture, but just try to develop a model that allows to realize the true meaning and its implication..
