This study examines the power relations in Michael Cunningham’s The Hours and Dong QiZhang’s Anzhuozhen’ni: yige bu cunzai de wuzhong de jinhuashi [Androgyny: an Evolution History of a Species that Does Not Exist] by depression as a strategy that is employed by a female caught in a power struggle. It demonstrates how female power may be mobilized under the impact of the family and social expectation that serves the interests of the patriarchal authority as the grand strategies for serving male domination in the power network. Both two novels contact with the power of female narrators to discover and rebuild their self-identities by creating a mirage opposed to the reality into which they can change and thus rebel against the restrictions and torments given by men/male dominated society. But on account of the difference between times as well as spaces, the ways Cunningham and Dong write about the process of the protagonist’s awakening are distinctive from each other. Foucault’s notions on power are fully implicated in the discussion, and Cixous’ notion of “other” bisexuality will be talked at the end of the thesis to present how female power is performed under the disposition of power by patriarchal authority.
