This research utilizes cartoon characters, the most familiar visual pictures in children’s daily life, to develop a class of art appreciation. This research hopes to introduce students the world of aesthetic thinking through their favorite cartoon characters. The research aims at the second graders in Taipei Municipal Wan Hua District Ta Li Elementary School. In the process of test-teaching, one group is arranged to be taught by using cartoon characters and another control group is taught without them. The final evaluations consist of:1. quantitative evaluation, which students’ questionnaire scores are analyzed. 2. Qualitative evaluation, which are teacher’s comments and suggestions towards the designed class. The conclusions are following:
1. Using cartoon-pictures teaching, students showed significant higher participation and longer attention span. Besides, students are more impressed by the learned art appreciation experiences. 2. Through this teaching method, students learn to appreciate simple expressionism and cubisms’ art pieces. 3. By practicing this teaching method, teachers found that students can easily transfer their emotions towards those cartoon pictures to similar art appreciation situation. Therefore, this teaching method can help students develop their sense of beauty; enhance their viewpoints of aesthetic thinking and also assist them to appreciate others’ art pieces.
