Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) tend to fail in new product development due to their limited resources and research capabilities. Therefore, SMEs must have the ability to reallocate their available resources and integrate with the external resources in order to continually create new capabilities and then, make a good performance in product innovation. Dynamic capabilities are composed of four elements, which are market-orientation, absorptive capacity, coordination capability and collective mind. Based on the conceptual framework of input-process-output, our research models dynamic capabilities as the mediating variables (process) between enterprise resources (input) and product innovation performance (output).
This study proposes to explore how SMEs initiate and link dynamic capabilities with product innovation. By surveying R&D managers, we receives 180 responses from a total of 600 questionnaires, of which 163 responses are qualified (27.17% response rate). With the analysis of AMOS, we found that:
(1) the internal resources do not make a significant effect on absorptive capacity and coordination capability; however, external resources significantly influence absorptive capacity, coordination capability and collective mind;
(2) all the four elements of dynamic capabilities impose a positive as well as significant impact on the performance of product innovation;
(3) internal resources influence the performance of product innovation in a significant level; nevertheless external resources do not show any obviously significant effect on the performance of product innovation.
