Research on the Meaning ofAvatamsaka Sutra’s Ten Buddha-Bodies
Abstract
The Avatamsaka Sutra is the Mahayana text that explores the stages of becoming Buddha by the ways of faith, understanding, practice and witness. It describes all kinds of Buddha virtues and the variety cultivation of Bodhisattvas realms. Originating in the Dharma-Body of Buddha(Vairocana), the “essence”, “form” and “function”(Three Bodies) will expand ten resulting merits. It also explores the resulting realms of Ten Bodies in a Huayan meeting by expanding principles to discriminate the change of human and things.
Consequently, the concept of Buddha-Bodies is extended from the “essence” to satisfactory “form”, “function” and from the “Ten” to a hundred million Buddha incarnatings, even to infinite ones. Therefore, the “Ten” symbolizes an endless number which contains all Buddha dharma. It also signifies the “ One is Ten and Ten is One,” “One is All and All is One” and ”One Buddha-Body is Ten Buddha-Bodies,” which corresponds to the dharma truth comprised by “Ten Buddha- Bodies” and to the performance of the charity, wisdom, vow and practice. In conclusion, the Ta Fang Kuang Fo Hua Yen Ching is characterized by the interpenetrating philosophy of the unobstructed Huayan teaching.
The research of this essay is clarified on Buddha-Bodies by major ways of explaining the contents of Avatamsaka Sutra. The theme of Buddha-Bodies is discussed in this essay from first chapter to fourth and explicated the different resulting merits through different levels.
The study of Ten Bodies inspires us to approach the perfect realms, upgrade the spiritual sentiment and promote the practicing levels. Through the reveals of Ten Buddha-Bodies and the scriptures of vast interpenetration, not only we can keep abreast of righteousness and goodness but open our unlimited minds. It will be a great benefit to the purification of bodies, minds and souls for research workers and readers.
