In order to achieve better outsourcing performance, a buying firm tends to regain its control by certain managerial behaviors. One of such behaviors is to involve itself in the OEM’s operations in production and purchasing. In prac-tice, contracts can be employed for mandating specific requirements such as meeting specs and delivery, but often times certain interventions are also used. The benefit of such interventions to help achieve the buying firm’s outsourcing performance is unclear and doubtful. This study attempts to empirically test the impact of such intervening behaviors on the buying firm’s purchasing per-formance with its OEMs, and, subsequently, possible effects on the OEMs’ col-laboration with their suppliers.
The questionnaires were sent to many of the electronics and component manufacturing companies in Taiwan. Structural Equation Models were used to analyze the 163 questionnaires received. The results indicate that such inter-vening behaviors by the buying firms indeed have significant impact on their purchasing performance with the OEMs, as well as the OEMs and their suppli-ers. The buying firms should balance the tradeoffs of such effects for better supply chain performance. Some managerial insights are provided.
