This thesis argues that the functions of the illogical section in When We Were Orphans are mainly three. Firstly, this section is to question the concept of binary oppositions such as the real and the imaginary, the West and the East, Westerners and Easterners, and rationality and madness. Secondly, it is to make readers experience by themselves the extent of Christopher Banks’s shock and incredulity at and after the time when Philip tells him about Wang Ku’s mistreatment of his mother. Thirdly, the unreasonable passage in this novel is to parody the Sherlock Holmes stories—which are completely realistic, emphasize objective or scientific survey, and underscore the clear-up of mysteries—in part because the Holmes stories are infused with the values of the bourgeois class.
