The purpose of this study is to investigate the safeguarding tension reside between the focal firms and their suppliers. From the awareness-motivation-capability perspective, we show how the focal firms perceive the safeguarding tension from their suppliers, and hence point out the importance of the safeguarding action and its implications.
In recent years, outsourcing frequently becomes a focal firms’ competitive advantage. Through outsourcing, focal firms can concentrate on the development of its core products. However, outsourcing suppliers are often difficult to train and requires large investment in money and time to maintain the cooperative relationship. As the cooperation period grows, outsourcing suppliers may gain both tangible and intangible resources from focal firms. Therefore, outsourcing suppliers may become a threat to the focal firms, and the supplying relationship turns into both cooperative and competitive. The main goal of this study is to determine the optimal way to manage such relationship.
The study analyzes a sample of 101 manufacturing firms that engage in outsourcing activities. Empirical results show that organization features, competitive motivation and absorptive capability are all positively related to the safeguarding tension. The safeguarding tension is positively related to safeguarding aggressiveness. Furthermore, there exists a non-linear relationship between safeguarding aggressiveness and safeguarding performance. Finally, the theoretical and practical implications of our findings are discussed, along with study limitations and recommendations for future research.
