In wireless broadband networks, the development of WiMAX is becoming popular. Owing to the rapidly grow of mobile devices, 802.16 working group has defined the 802.16e standard which supports the mobility management. As the applications of multimedia services increase, instant quality of services is getting important. Recently, SIP becomes one of the major communication protocols for voice or video multimedia applications. It also provides mechanism for mobility management. When moving in the IP-based network, the user may suffer from different degree of handoff latency according to visited network environment. How to provide the seamless mobility of service is a critical issue.
With SIP, as the MN moves to a new network, it sends the CN a re-INVITE message to re-establish the connection. This re-INVITE operation may cause some delay, and the delay will be longer when the handoff frequency becomes higher. In order to assure the quality of the service, a Hierarchical SIP (HSIP) mechanism is proposed.
In this thesis, we describe how 802.16e works, and we analysis the flow that 802.16e and SIP brings out while handoff is processing, we combine those messages from two different layers. According to the HSIP, a MN only needs to update its new IP address with the corresponding HSIP server. In addition, we explore message flows as a MN moves, and set up a simulation to compare the delay with original flows. Finally, we analyze handoff delay and packet loss to the proposed handoff scheme, compared with original flow of hierarchical SIP in WiMAX through simulation. The results of the simulation show that our handoff scheme may achieve fast handoff.
