The purpose of this qualitative study was to design a strengths-based parent-child adventure program, to examine the effects of this program, and to investigate what factors cause parent-child relationship to change during this program.
In past research, the researchers proposed that six major qualities are commonly present in strong families. According to these six major qualities in strong families, the researcher in this study designed a one and half day adventure program. Besides, the researcher was also the facilitator who helped children and parents process adventurous experiences. Three families volunteered to participate in this program. The data was collected by complete observation, participative observation, interview, and questionnaire.
Results showed that this program empowered the parent-child relationship. They were not only stronger in the six major qualities, but also better understood each other’s strengths talents. This study also demonstrated factors that cause parent-child relationship to change in this program. The factors included immediate achievements, learning through experience, an encouraging atmosphere, disequilibrium, parent mission, group dynamics, husband /wife dyadic relationship, personal challenge, shared experiences, belay, and processing adventurous experiences.
According to the above-mentioned results, the researcher had some discussions for the results and proposed suggestions for practitioners. First, design the program from a strength perspective. Second, practitioners need to focus on facilitating both group and each family time. Third, before the group starts, collect more information about families. Fourth, help all family members to share adventure experiences. The last, improving the facilitators’ ability.
