藻類與細菌產生之胞外聚合物質(extracellular polymeric substances,EPS)對於海洋重金屬與放射性核種的鍵結與清除作用上扮演著重要的角色,但其化學成分與來源,仍是相當模糊。為了更加瞭解EPS的主要成分與來源,本論文分析了台灣北部海水以及擬球藻(N. oculata)在不同營養鹽之條件下所產生之EPS,結果顯示海水中之EPS含有22 ~ 30 % 的碳水化合物與3 ~ 6 % 之醣醛酸(uronic acids, URA)。而擬球藻在磷濃度固定於0.362 mM時,隨著NO3濃度(從3 mM增加到46 mM時)的上升,其藻類所產生的EPS含量分別為2、15、18、12和40mg/L。但產生之醣醛酸高值則是出現在N = 0.883 mM,P = 0.0362 mM (N/P=24) 及N = 18.54 mM,P = 0.362 mM (N/P=51)的培養基中,此結果顯示在磷限制的情況下,N. oculata皆會產生較高的EPS及URA。
