The research topic of this thesis is the published creative songs by indigenous people of Taiwan, focusing on the three tribes of the Amis, the Puyuma, and the Tsou. The author has collected 271 media documents of aboriginal/indigenous creative songs via the internet, CD shops and shops exhibiting aboriginal products during the researching period from 2005 to 2007, within which include 42 albums of the Amis, 18 of the Puyuma, 11 of the Tsou, 61 of the tribes other than the three mentioned, and 139 of mixed indigenous groups. The collected data is grouped geographically from east to west of Taiwan, by tribes of the Amis, the Puyuma and the Tsou. Chapter 1 discusses the developmental background of indigenous creative songs in Taiwan by surveying word documents including periodicals, books and theses/essays, media documents, and internet resources that describe the development of indigenous creative songs. Chapters 2 to 4 analyze the current status of the creative songs among the Amis, the Puyuma and the Tsou through the inspection of the beginning and development of the creative songs, the significant song writers and works along with tune and music analysis. Chapter 5 lists the significant works of the three tribes with further comparison and discussion. This thesis, through data collection, document analysis and fieldwork, is completed by methods of analysis, induction, comparison and research. It is the author’s hope that through the various data collection, sorting and analysis, the thesis will give the public a clearer picture of the current condition of the indigenous creative songs, as well as serving as an encouragement and reference to the indigenous song writers present and future.
