本研究利用中央氣象局地面測站與ECMWF ERA40 2.5°×2.5°全球網格點資料探討1949-2004年台灣冬季（12-2月，DJF）寒潮的長期變化。研究結果顯示，近56年台灣寒潮總個數為221次，平均每年為3.9次。其中一月份平均次數最多(1.8次)，2月份次之(1.2次)，十二月份最少(0.9次)，從大尺度環流場得知，西伯利亞高壓與東亞主槽的強弱是造成不同月份寒潮平均次數不同的主要原因，其中尤以東亞主槽的影響更明顯。寒潮總天數為627天，平均每年有11.2天，與寒潮次數相似，一月份寒潮平均天數最多(5.5天)，二月份次之(3.5天)，十二月份最少(2.2天) 。
台灣寒潮在1976/77年出現明顯轉折，之前(1957-1977)寒潮次數明顯偏多(5.4次/年)，之後(1981-2001)明顯偏少(2.8次/年)。七年滑動平均顯示，台灣寒潮次數、西伯利亞高壓與北大西洋震盪(North Atlantic Oscillation，NAO)有顯著相關，寒潮偏多的時期(1957-1977)，西伯利亞高壓偏強，正好對應NAO負相位，偏少的時期，結果相反。從NAO的點相關圖得知，西伯利亞高壓、東亞主槽以及貝加爾湖上游的高空脊與NAO顯著相關，此三者在NAO負相位期間皆轉強，有利於台灣寒潮的發生，NAO正相位期間結果相反。
除了NAO外，我們同時比較其他大氣結構，例如 PDO(Pacific Decadal Oscillation)、AO(Artic Oscillation)、ENSO(El Niño and Southern Oscillation)和NP(North Pattern)與台灣寒潮的關係，除了AO外，其餘氣候指標與台灣寒潮次數的關係並不明顯，研究顯示，NAO/AO與華南底層緯向風場顯著相關，是NAO/AO與台灣寒潮次數年代際變化高度相關的關鍵。
