本篇研究旨在探究一般人與犯罪人對於被害人的態度。社會案件中的被害人，其遭遇總令人同情，然而不論是在案發當時、或是案發之後，他們卻不一定能獲得旁人適時的協助。本研究以「正義世界信念」為基礎，瞭解一般人和犯罪人正義世界信念的差異，以及性別、教育程度，乃至被害經驗的有無是否會影響其對於被害人的認知態度對於被害人的態度上的差異，以期能透過本篇研究，澄清不同背景的受試者對於犯罪被害人的態度，並希望個體在面臨周遭犯罪案件發生時，能更加積極的給予被害人適當的協助；另一方面，從司法矯正的觀點來看，透過本篇研究，期望能因此讓矯正單位瞭解犯罪人對被害人的態度認知之偏差之處，進而能在教化犯罪人上給予適當的協助。
整體而言，一般人相較於犯罪人，對被害人的態度較為同情，犯罪人較為苛責被害人的責任；在性別方面，男性對於被害人相對較為同情，在對四種被害人的苛責上則沒有顯著差異存在。在年齡方面，不論是對那種被害人，中齡組對於被害人的態度較為同情，而高齡組則較為苛責被害人的責任。最後，沒有被害經驗的人會對於被害人的態度較為苛責。
最後，本研究的結果發現，一般人與犯罪人的正義世界信念是有差異的，犯罪人的正義世界信念相較於一般人是較為強烈的，一般人相較於犯罪人不認為應當以嚴罰來面對惡行，他們也較不抱持著善有善報、惡有惡報的觀念。而在正義世界信念的影響下，一般人與犯罪人對於被害人的態度也是有顯著差異的。
