As a realistic novelist, George Eliot is remarkable for her insistence on truthfulness and her psychological perspicacity. This thesis aims to investigate Eliot’s treatment of the psychological aspects in The Mill on the Floss. With the examination of textual evidences, the first chapter carries out the research on Eliot’s innovative use of psychological realism from three aspects: the manifestation of metal alternation as the inherent key plot, the representation of the complexity of mental movement, and the use of free indirect discourse. Chapter Two centers on how Eliot utilizes psychological realistic techniques to display the influence of social milieu on characters’ personalities and to reinforce the theme of the individual-society relations in The Mill on the Floss. Chapter Three discusses Eliot’s conception of sympathy and its application to the moral issues in The Mill on the Floss. Eliot thinks that sympathy is the true morality, making psychological realism the access to the characters’ internal worlds to achieve her artistic intention of arousing readers’ sympathy for the fictional characters as well as our fellow human beings. Eliot’s employment of psychological realism not only explores the unmapped territory of the human mind but also makes a great progress in the manifestation of characters’ inner world in the history of novel.
