Innovation is vital for firm growth. Corporate venturing investments are identified as a strategic way for enhancing innovation, since it stimulates new product development and create a window on novel technologies. Previous studies showed that corporate venturing investments affect subsequent knowledge creation for corporate investors. However, the link between attributes of investment portfolio and knowledge profile has not been examined in depth. This study seeks to bridge the research by exploring how different configurations of corporate venturing investment portfolio influence the corporate investors’ knowledge outcomes (i.e., knowledge diversity and knowledge depth). Our empirical analyses are based on the panel data from listed IC design companies during year 2000 to 2007. We found that, investment diversity was negative and significantly correlated with the knowledge depth. Investment domain, investment diversity and number of investments were positively and significantly correlated with the knowledge scope.
The main contribution of this study: Firstly of all, in the past, the heterogeneity of the investment lead to vague studies. Therefore, this study got beyond the existing literature limit, we separate the meaning of corporate venturing investment portfolio into investment domain, investment diversity and number of investments. Secondly, this study separated knowledge profile into depth and scope. Our empirical data which has confirmed the corporate venturing investment portfolio will have an impact on the knowledge profile.
