The weather pattern in central Taiwan is rainy in summer and dry in winter. The typhoons in summer often bring heavy rain and cause flooding. Large floods usually cause reduction in the abundance, taxon richness, and diversity of macro invertebrate. The main purposes of this study are to identify the recolonization process of lotic insects after flooding, and to study the impact of the drop spillway on the lotic insect community structure. Two days after the heavy rain brought up by a typhoon from July to October in 2008, macroinvertebrates were collected at each microhabitat for every five days until the thirtieth day using Surber’s samper (area= 0.34×0.34m2; mesh size = 250μm). In order to study the processes of colonization of lotic insect community with flooding, all the samples were identified to the family level. Data on traits were derived accord to the available biological information on species. There were significant differences in water depth, stream width, and current velocity at different microhabitats by drop spillway, which did not affect the community structure of the lotic insect community. The chemical factors changed with time after flooding, but lotic insects caught tolerate these changes. Baetidae, Chironomidae,Tanypoinea, and Hydropsychidae were the first group colonizing the area after flooding. With the perspective of biological traits, female dispersal ability and drift frequency are the most important traits for colonization. Species with a short life history was also found in the early recolonization process. The resilience is a main tactic for the lotic insects to adapt flooding.
