Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of one-year low intensity resistance training on body composition, physical fitness, blood lipid and adipocytokines in postmenopausal women.
Methods: Twenty-one healthy volunteers completed in this study. Subjects were assigned to exercise group(n=11, age: 55.5±4.3 yrs, BMI: 23.5±5.2 kg/m2) and control group (n=10, age 54.3±3.3 yrs, BMI: 23.7±3.6 kg/m2). The exercise group was instructed to progressively increase the intensities in strength training by using the elastic bands and the body weight for 2 days per week, 60 min per session for one year. Body composition, blood lipid, blood adipokines and physical fitness were assessed at baseline and after one year.
Results: The exercise group showed a significant reduction in fat mass, fat ratio and leg fat mass, hip circumference and triceps skinfold thickness. The control group showed a significant increase in the trunk fat mass, and increased suprailiac skinfold thickness (p<0.5). The exercise group has improved significantly in the flexible, 60-second abdominal crunch, 30s chair stand and 2 min stepping in physical fitness (p<0.5). The exercise group also showed a significant reduction in glucose and the control group has decreased significantly in the high density lipoprotein (p<0.5). There were no significant changes were observed in blood leptin and adpionectin between both groups.
Conclusions: Low intensity resistance training can reduce body fat and improve physical fitness in postmenopausal women. Therefore, low intensity resistance training can be promoted to maintain health in the sedentary or not exercise regularly postmenopausal women.
