Nowadays, people can not live without internet, and internet addiction becomes more and more serious. In the deeply irresistible love of leisure, recreation and even work, flow is considered a positive and cheerful component as a optimal experience; on the other hand, addiction is considered the opposite and evil one. Though, very less discuss with the relationship between flow experience and addiction.
The purposes of this study were to explore the personality of chat room uses, flow experience and the relation to the addiction of internet chat room users, and tried to find strategies of minimizing internet addition.
The study was a quantitative research and the research tool was a close-ended question design survey that was tested by validity and reliability. By convenient sampling process, total of 247 valid surveys were collected and the response rate was 62%. For data analysis, the researchers conducted descriptive, Pearson’s correlation and One-way ANOVA analyses.
Based on the results, the researchers found that the male invested long time in internet chat room more than the female. Compared with the married users, the singles were easily become addiction to internet chat room. In addition, there was a highly positive correlation between flow experience and addiction. When chat room users perceived higher level of flow, the users became highly addicted to internet chat room; especially the curiosity was found to be the most powerful element for achieving flow experience and influencing the level of addiction to internet chat room.
This research found “out of control” was the factor that had influence most in the network addiction. Furthermore, “agreeableness”of Big Five personalities were easily out of control and also easy addiction in chat room. This result differed from past study to point out that the “neuroticism”more addict to internet. “agreeableness” would like to care for the others, also will not refuse others and beyond control.
Therefore, the researcher suggests that total prohibition of using internet chat room may even drives one’s curiosity and may not be the best way to control or decrease the negative effects of internet addition, especially toward single males. By introducing healthier and more interacted leisure and recreation, such as internet virtual sport games, and gradually introducing true sport games or healthier recreation activities maybe a better strategy to decrease level or the opportunity of internet addiction.
For future research, the researcher suggests to conduct further research factors increase the research of mental level from the serious leisure, understand the user's main interest in the life of the internet chat room to enhance flowing freely positive efficiency and reduce the negative influence of addiction.
