The aim of this thesis is not merely to explore how Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's concepts are conceived but also to show how their concepts can be brought to build a bridge between postcolonial issues particularly raised by J. M. Coetzee in his novel, Waiting for the Barbarians. Paying special attention to Deleuze and Guattari's ethics of resistance to the existing State apparatus, this thesis attempts to argue that their concepts can be brought to bear on the postcolonial discourse and, more importantly, to shed light on the phenomenon of colonialism.

Three Deleuzoguattarian concepts are employed in this thesis: 1) war machine; 2) smooth space; and 3) rhizome. Theses three concepts are further connected with other concepts, such as lines of flight, deterritorialization, and becoming. Moreover, these concepts are connected with the Outside (or the Other) to resist the existing State apparatus (of the colonial power), and take the lines of flight from its capture and codification.

The Magistrate in Waiting for the Barbarians in his relationship with the barbarians and against the imperial power he works for best embodies Deleuze and Guattari's conceptual figure. We see a magistrate out of the writing of history, who keeps a close relationship (rapport) with the outside, in terms of the gesture, ethics, and politics.
Through Coetzee's novel and Deleuze and Guattari's concepts, this thesis attempts to summon a hybrid discussion on their corpus. Their corpus evinces a vertiginous complicity with the barbarians, the colonized, the colored women, and so forth. This vividly shows that the Deleuzoguattarian conceptual figure, who situates himself in the middle (au milieu) and always connects himself to the Other, is becoming-other (or barbarian), and deterritorializes himself.
